DIY INSPIRATION - TURQUOISE NAILS AT GRETCHEN JONES

Whoa these turquoise nails seen at the Gretchen Jones A/W12 show have seriously stolen my heart. They were designed to look exactly like turquoise stones, and are so different so anything I've seen. I think they were done using a wrap - basically a sticker over the nail - but I wonder if you could do it using turquoise shatter polish with black underneath? Any other ideas?

DIY RAINBOW CAKES IN A JAR

I thought you might like some food porn prior to being inundated with fashion week posts. But seriously, have you ever seen something so delicious looking? These rainbow cakes in a jar would be the perfect alternative to a birthday cake and are also a great idea if you have to travel to a friends house for the party. Ever had to get on the underground with a cake or 20 cupcakes? Painful. With these, simply pop the lid back on the jars once the cakes have cooled and then frost the cakes when you reach your destination. Instructions right this way.

And, in homage to fashion month, maybe instead of saying 'give that model a burger' we can say 'give that model a rainbow cake in a jar'?....

DIY FRINGED SUEDE ANKLETS

Never one to wear something without changing it at least slightly, I recently embellished a pair of Tony Bianco heels by putting DIY suede anklets over the top. I think these embellished heels would look killer worn a la Isabel Marant A/W11 with a khaki jacket and ripped up denim shorts. What's even better is that the tutorial for these anklets is so incredibly simple, it's a project that even the most novice of DIYer could make a go of. DIY PEPLUM SKIRT

You probably already know that peplums are set to be a key trend this season. I was recently pondering how I could make my own version of the peplum - without having to faff around with bias cutting circular fabric etc. I then remembered a linen skirt that I thrifted a few weeks ago on a whim (one dollar yall!) and realised that its construction made it perfect for my next before & after project. The peplum skirt.

Wearing: DIY Peplum skirt, Country Road Singlet, Karen Walker Sunglasses, DIY suede anklets (tutorial to come), heels courtesy of Tony Bianco.

The original skirt had a flared/fishtail style hem that was cut on the bias, not unlike the way a peplum is cut. I decided to remove it from the bottom of the skirt and resew it onto the top of the same skirt, this was actually a lot more simple than it looks.

Here's a little S/S12 peplum inspiration for you.

You need:

- A flared hem skirt (examples here and you'll find them in thrift stores )

- Scissors

- A sewing machine

- Thread matching your skirt

- Pins

How to:

1. First remove the flared part of the skirt using scissors. I did this by separating the seams so I didn't cut into the fabric and cause fraying.
2. My skirt only actually had the flared part at the sides and flat panels at the back and front. I cut the whole section off including the flat panels.

3. Cut the flared section into two panels to go on the sides of your skirt. I did this by putting the flared section on around my waist and working out how much fabric to remove to have the peplums sitting on the sides with about a 10cm gap in the middle.

4. Hem the edges of the peplum pieces so they look clean and polished.

6. Pin the peplum pieces to the skirt.

7. Sew the peplum pieces onto the skirt. My skirt had a zip in the back left hand side of the skirt so I sewed the peplum on but only to the edge of the zip, and then I attached the rest of the peplum (about 5cm) with a hook and eye. If your skirt has a zip in the middle of the back it will be much easier.

8. Finally I hemmed the skirt.

How easy was that? I wore it recently and it was a complete winner! For those of you who are interested, in these pics I'm also wearing another of my recent DIYs - black suede fringed anklets over the top of black suede Tony Bianco heels. Tutorial to come.

DIY HOME - CHALKBOARD PAINT

Who doesn't love DIY chalkboards around the house - on walls, cabinet doors, milk bottles and just about everywhere else. I love that you can just slap on some chalkboard paint and away you go. Perfect for writing love (or hate) notes and also for covering with rubbish when you've had too many bottles of wine with friends. I'm in the process of moving house and think this is a great idea for my next place - but in a frame so the owner doesn't have a heart attack. One of my favourite projects is this one, and did you know you can make your own chalk paint in any colour? How. Good. Here's some inspiration for where to slap your chalkboard paint.

DIY INSPIRATION - DIP DYED KNIT

Even though many of us are looking towards spring and summer, in reality most of us are still wrapping up in order to leave the house (except southern hemisphere readers - but your turn will come!). And by now your knits are probably looking a bit tired after constant wear - so how about breathing a bit of life into them with some dip dying? I love this look.

Copy the one below by dip dying a coloured knit, but dipping upside down so the gradation of colour comes from the top. You could also do reverse dying - by taking a dark blue knit and bleaching the colour out of the bottom - although it's more difficult to know what you'll get what you do this. One last tip - always use natural fabrics like cotton, denim or wool, as polyester doesn't take one dye very well. Yup, been there, done that.

DIY HOME - THE HANGING INSPIRATION WALL

I love this idea for a hanging inspiration wall. Pin some lengths of wire or string to the wall and then sellotape magazine tear outs, postcards, love notes etc onto the string. Why not do a monthly hanging wall with your favourite looks, places to travel to, instagram print outs and whatever else takes your fancy? Such a simple way to feel inspired.

DIY BRIGHTLY LINED LACE MINI SKIRT

Recently I refashioned a white lace mini skirt by lining it with a tube of bright red/orange jersey fabric - inspired by similar skirts I saw from Sass & Bide and Taylor Tomasi Hill for Lane Crawford. I made a tube of jersey to add but alternatively you could add a ready made colored tube skirt and just alter it to fit the zip in your skirt if it has one.

You need:
- A white lace mini skirt (here or here). A pencil skirt would also look good!
- Some bright coloured jersey fabric - use any colour you like!
- A needle and thread
- Scissors
- A Sewing Machine (optional)

How to:
1. Lay the skirt over the top of the jersey fabric to work out how long you need the tube skirt.
2. Cut out the fabric in the shape of the skirt, cutting a piece that is double the hip width of the skirt (so you can fold it in half and sew one seam to create a tube).
3. Fold the fabric in half.
4. Sew the edges together to create a tube - you can hand or machine sew.There will probably be a zip somewhere in your lace skirt - back or side, so leave an opening in the seam of your tube for the zip.
5. Put the skirt on and slip the tube over the top of the lining but under the lace - orientating the seam of the jersey tube to the seam of the zip
6. Push the tube carefully between the fabric all the way to the edges of the waistband and zip and pin in place. You want none of the original lining to be showing through.
7. Take the skirt off and carefully hand stitch the coloured jersey lining in place along the waistband and down the sides of the zip.

Voila! You should have completely covered the original lining with the coloured tube skirt. I didn't have much problem with riding up of the jersey lining - make your tube skirt quite tight to stop this happening.

And you're done! You can wear this skirt a few times like this, and then remove the coloured lining or replace with another colour afterwards. Talk about making your clothes work for you rather than the other way around.

HOW TO WEAR BLACK AND WHITE

In the past I always struggled to wear black and white without feeling like a waitress. Not that there's anything wrong with being a waitress - in fact my aversion is a side effect of having worked (or rather tried my hardest to do as little as possible) in hospitality while I was at university - with the dress code virtually always being black and white. My memories mostly revolve around being covered in spilt coffee and dropping things the whole time (was a rubbish waitress!). But funnily enough in the last year or so basic black and white has become a staple in my wardrobe - it's always such an easy combo. Taking inspiration from some amazing streetstyle - here are some ideas about how to wear it.

Textures - When in doubt I always go for textured fabrics like knits or leather to dress up the outfit.

Proportions - Play with proportions by mixing in mega wide leg trousers or a maxi skirt.

Accessories - Go bright and big with hats, belts, handbags, big collar necklaces or sky high heels (but um, not all at once). A black and white ensemble is the perfect base from which to work bold accessories.

Bright lips - Bright red lippy paired with a black and white ensemble never fails to ground you in french chic territory (rather than waiter territory).
Top to tail - Most people will wear black on the bottom and white on the top - but why not go the opposite?

Classic white shirt - Although the white shirt can be the biggest culprit when it comes to making you look like you work in hospitality - who can go past a classic white silk shirt? And works so well paired with high-waisted trousers. I guess even if you do wind up looking like a waitress, at least you'll look like great.
Mix it up - If you're really struggling, pair black and white with dark denim or grey marl.

This week has seen Harper's BAZAAR Style Network celebrate Australia Day by focusing on Australian Designers - with the girls donning some gorgeous outfits by local Aussie designers. I decided to go a little bit abstract on the Australian theme and do a project that would be perfect to wear that quintessentially Australian festivity - the good old BBQ. This sequin bra would be perfect worn under a sheer white singlet or tee paired with denim cut offs and gladiator flats, and from it I get a bit of an Ellery or Sass & Bide vibe.

HONG KONG THROUGH THE LENS

I've been meaning to show you my neighbourhood of Sheung Wan in Hong Kong for ages - but have obviously been too busy DIYing. Lucky for me the amazingly talented Louise Hawson recently got out and about with her camera and captured perfectly the mix of old and new in my suburb - with some pics literally taken downstairs from my apartment. Louise has just embarked on her 52 Suburbs In A Year project travelling around the world, after completing the 52 Suburbs of Sydney in 2011. Her visuals are stunning to say the least - and I'm pretty envious of her plans for the next 12 months travelling around the world. Can't wait to see her take on New York, Berlin and Istanbul!

DIY PREDICTION: JIL SANDER PAPER LUNCH BAG

Even though no one asked, here's my prediction for 2012 - the most DIYed item will be the Jil Sander paper lunch bag. Much like the Jil Sander Market Bag (that looked pretty much like a plastic bag) - this lunch bag was seen at the Jil Sander Mens F/W12 show and is sure to be a hit with DIYers all around the world. Carrying your tuna sandwiches to work never looked so good - or is perhaps all of a sudden cool? Make it out of supple leather for a bag that won't disintegrate at the first sign of rain.

DIY JEWELED BLACK VELVET HEADBAND

It was pretty clear from looking at the red carpet at the Golden Globes that headbands are having a moment - and not just for the preppy crowd. The TODAY Show invited me to make my version of the black velvet headband worn by Michelle Williams at the awards - you can check out my post and also have a peek at Michelle's Golden Globes headband here. Read on for the most simple tutorial. Ever.

You need:

- Enough black velvet ribbon to wrap around your head.

- A couple of inches of black elastic, the same width as the velvet.

- A rhinestone or beaded feature for the headband. I used rhinestone embellished ribbon but you can also use a broach, beads, glittery belt buckle, single rhinestones or whatever you want to act as the sparkly feature for your headband.

- A needle and thread.

- Scissors.

How to:

1. Cut the ribbon to size by measuring it around your head - leaving a 3 inch gap at the back where you will sew the elastic to make it easier to wear.
2. Sew one side of the elastic to the underside of the ribbon.

3. Sew the other side of the elastic to the other side of the ribbon. You will now have a round headband.

4. Try the headband on to make sure it fits properly. Then look to decide where you want to attach your feature piece. Slightly off centre to the left or right side of your head usually looks the best.

And you're done! Could it be any easier? To wear it, I put in on while my hair is down, and then lightly pin my hair up once it is in place. Looks perfect worn with a breton top and jeans, or on a night out with a black silk cami and bright pink wide leg trousers.

DIY INSPIRATION - LOVER LACE DRESS

This gorgeous lace dress by Australian brand Lover has to be one of my favourite pieces from last year. It's been on my mind for ages and has inspired in me a love for this 'dippy at the front' hemline. Not something I would usually go for at all, but it's seriously grown on me recently. You could make something similar yourself by altering a thrifted dress and cutting and hemming to look like this - much in the same way I made the fishtail skirt. So what are you waiting for?

DIY HOME - PHOTO WALLS

Nothing makes me happier than walls filled with photos - from holidays, travels and just random candids. Polaroids are the absolute best - but the film can be pricey. A more budget friendly option is to print your instagram photos at polaroid size on a normal colour printer, or you can print your photos with a white border to give them that polaroid feel. Then put them up on wall or (my personal favourite) in an oversized frame. You can see an example of how to make an instagram wall here.

DIY SCARF PRINTS

Scarf prints are trending pretty heavily right now - a la vintage Versace, more recently in the Celine S/S11 show and now they seem to be pretty much everywhere. I think they look so good on, and what's even better is that your local thrift store most likely has a mountain of vintage printed scarves for you to make a masterpiece out of. Scroll down for a few ideas.

DIY INSPIRATION - SASS & BIDE S/S12 ACCESSORIES

The Sass & Bide S/S12 collection has completely stolen my heart. As you probably know, it inspired my neon necklaces (here and here) and I was so happy to receive so many pics of your recreations as part of my reader DIY request (more on that shortly!).

This diamond clutch bag in neon patent leather with a chain wrist strap has been haunting me since I peeked at the accessories guide in store when I was in Brisbane. Lets just say it's in the works. I also have a few other S&B inspired pieces waiting to be finished - and don't worry, for those of you who are sick of neon I'm branching out, I promise! TREND: NEOPRENE

There's no time like the present to start wearing wetsuit inspired dresses, tops, leggings and a host of other neoprene pieces. Although I can't help but think this whole 'surf luxe' trend is one of the more ridiculous S/S12 looks, the super tight fabric makes for perfect body contouring. If you live somewhere moderately warm this is best kept for those trans-seasonal nights - but not so good for high summer.

Of course, it wouldn't be a trend worth a second look unless there were possible DIYs. I'll be hunting in my local thrift store to find some secondhand wetsuits - and then cutting and embellishing them to look like some of the pieces below. You could also check out your local Target or Walmart and pick up a rash vest to cut out and embellish. Given that the plastic wetsuit style zip is a key component to this look - how about sewing an oversized neon pink or yellow plastic zip onto the back of a black tube skirt or singlet?

If you're feeling like this is all too much for you - dip your toe into the trend (so to speak) by picking up some wetsuit style leggings and wearing with super high heels and a slouchy tee.

HOW TO USE YOUR WEEKLY DIARY PLANNER

As they always say - preparation is key. I know lots of people shy away from planners or weekly diaries and many have taken their whole lives online (my boyfriend recently told me it’s time to get in 'the cloud’) but sometimes there's something satisfying about writing things down. And can I be honest and say I don't really trust 'the cloud' that much? Like, erm, what is it? So this year – why not go lo-fi (how hipster!) and get yourself a diary/planner in which to write your goals, appointments, to do lists, random thoughts and anything else that strikes you. I'm in no way an expert on this but I'm a crazy list maker - to the point of being ridiculous sometimes - and I'm pretty sure its been useful in keeping me on track in the past. I like the type of diaries that have a whole week across two pages (this is what I currently use) - you could always go for a day-to-a-page diary if you like but they are obviously more bulky. And don't worry, even though it's mid way through January - better late than never right?

Get started using it:

1. First things first – mark out your public holidays or other sorts of holidays (uni, school etc).

2. Mark in your friends and family birthdays – you can find these in the events section of Facebook if your friends are on it. Get on the phone and ask for dates if needbe.

3. Mark in your diary any weekly or monthly appointments you have (ie weekly deadline for my Harper’s BAZAAR post, tennis lessons etc). I usually only do this one or two months in advance as you never know what can change.

4. Add in any new years resolutions – putting in specific goals in relation to savings, health, fitness etc.

5. Use your weekly diary as a place to write your appointments, to do lists and others. If you get a chance you can sit down on a Sunday/Monday and plan the week out in advance - exercise, catch ups with friends, emails and any major tasks you need to complete.
6. If you're a blogger you can use your diary to keep track of what you want to post and any other things you need to do.

BEFORE & AFTER: PRINTED CUT OUT DRESS

It seems we're all looking forward to the coming summer months, so I thought I would share with you another of my 'cheat' dress projects - a summer cut out dress. It's not exactly a traditional sewing project because I'm not sure a wrapped bodice counts, but it's simple and effective and I thought you might find it useful. For me this dress brings to mind Carven, Mara Hoffman and all manner of other fun S/S12 collections. Apologies to all of those of you for whom it is the middle of winter, indeed it is for me too in Hong Kong, but I did this project while I was in Australia on holidays! Something to bookmark for summer perhaps?

You need:
- A thrifted midi skirt
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Straps to make the halter - I used raffia

How to:

1. Put the skirt on and measure the minimum length you want.

2. Cut off the skirt about an inch below the minimum length.

3. Hem the mini skirt.

4. Cut the piece of leftover fabric open so it's a long strip of fabric.

You will now have a mini skirt and a piece of fabric left over from the hem - it should be atleast 15cm wide to do this and wider if you have bigger breasts/wider ribcage. Check out the moving image below to see how I wrap the top. I'm wearing a bikini top in the demonstration but would usually do it without anything on and just wrap really tight for support. You can wear a bra if you prefer - just make sure to cover it properly.

5.Start with the fabric behind your back - tuck the part of the fabric across your back into the waistband of the skirt so it looks like the back of a dress.

6. Holding the two ends with your hands, bring the two ends around across your breasts.

7. Twist the pieces of fabric in the middlen at the bust and bring back around in the direction they came.

8. Tuck into the waistband.

9. To add straps - pin them in place once you are wearing the top, then remove the top and sew the straps on.

10. When you are ready to wear the dress out, sew the ends of the fabric to the underside of the waistband of the skirt using a few small stitches, so it doesn't move around while you wear it.

And there you have it - another simple minimal sewing dress. You could use this process to create the perfect little back dress, and even use contrasting fabrics/straps etc to created an entirely different look.

DIY ELLERY INSPIRED DIP DYE SKIRT

Ummm how good is this Ellery inspired dip dyed skirt that one of my readers Jasmine posted on instagram not long ago? She used my dip dye tutorial but instead of using watered down dye to get an ombre look she used a stronger dye to get a more noticeable line - but still did the graduated colour by dipping. I thought about doing this as soon as I saw Jess wearing 'the ventures' dress a while ago - and was so glad that someone out there has done it!

I have to say that one of my favourite things about instagram is the number of people that do DIYs and post pics - some even send me a little mention which totally makes my day. DIYagram is what it should really be called.

Net-a-porter reported twin and sibling bags as being a key trend it in their recent magazine, and I saw this very cool multi-coloured triple bag over at The Blonde Salad. What's not to love? DIY JEWELRY DISPLAY [NY RESOLUTION #1]

Make a fresh start to the year by organising your wardrobe - starting with the pile of jewelry strewn across your dressing table. DIY a super organised (and pretty) jewelry display using not too much more than whatever you have lying around the house. I love to have a few different ways to display various pieces of jewelry so it's all visible and accessible when I'm putting an outfit together. Here are a few ideas that you can mix and match.

Bowls - Use pretty bowls to display rings and bracelets. You can also use antique ashtrays.

Branch/twig stands - Create a jewelry stand from branches and twigs and hang from the wall for easy access. Check out this tutorial to make your own stand.

Picture frame display - Attach string or wire horizontally across the inside of picture frames and then attach to the wall. Then hang your jewelry.

Astrological Hand - Perfect for stacking rings and available here.

Cork Board - Store your jewelry amongst your postcards and favourite party pictures. Dot the cork board with pins and hang with your jewelry.

Antique Cake Stands - Glass domed lid cake stands make for a lovely way to store your jewelry and keep it from getting dusty.

Chocolate Box Ring Tray - Use a Ferrero Rocher tray to store your rings. How. Good.

DIY METAL BELT

Metal belts have been on my mind and at the absolute top of my DIY list for a long time. I finally found the material I needed to make my own version when I was back in Australia on holidays - aluminium flashing which is sheet metal used in roofs, found at the hardware store. Read on for an incredibly simple (and cheap!) tutorial.

You need:
- Approx 1 metre of 0.03mm or 0.05mm thick Aluminium Flashing - used in roofing and available in most hardware stores. It cost me around AUD$2.50 for the metre.
- Scissors
- Hammer
- Towel
- Rope, leather or wire to secure at the back

How to:

1. Using scissors cut a strip of flashing to size - I cut mine about 7cm wide and 75cm long to suit my waist with a little extra at the ends.

2. To effectively 'hem' the edge of the metal (so that you don't cut yourself while wearing it), place your flashing on a table with about 1cm along the length of it hanging over the side of the table. Using your fingers, push the metal down so it is flush with the corner of the table. Turn the metal over and push it down all the way down along the edge. Repeat this on the other long edge of the belt.

5. To finish the edges, cover with a towel and hammer lightly with the hammer along the edge so it is nice and flat. You can also place the belt between two phone books and hammer the edges to make sure it is finished well.

6. Carefully bend the belt around your waist or something round like a bucket, making sure not to fold it - the less it folds or bends the better the belt will look.

7. Roll the two ends of the belt over so that you have two tubes at the ends. I rolled the ends around a pencil to make it easier.

8. Finally, thread the tubes with ribbon, leather or rope and tie in a bow or tuck into the tubes at the back to secure the belt. I used some plastic covered fencing wire but you can use whatever you want.

Here's the finished product. Given how cheap aluminium flashing is you can make a few different versions - thick, thin, hammered, smooth etc.

And there you go! How easy is that? The belt goes with just about every outfit you can imagine - and suits summer as much as it does winter.

DIY ROKSANDA ILINCIC NEON BLOCK HEELS

You may remember a while ago I posted here about a pair of amazing neon block colour heels I spotted at a collection preview eveing, which turned out to be Nicholas Kirkwood for Roksanda Ilincic S/S12. How fricking cool are they? I knew that they were a prime candidate for a little bit of DIY action, and was so happy when a reader Katie let me know she had made a pair herself. How good!

You need:
A pair of block heels - Katie used a white faux leather pair that had a wooden block heel.
White and neon yellow spraypaint
Painted tape or masking tape

How to:
1. Tape the edges of the heel of the shoe so that none of the spray paint gets on the rest of the shoe.
2. Do a light coat of white spraypaint as the base and then follow with the neon yellow.
3. Leave to dry.
4. Remove the tape.

Done and done.

DIY NEON CUFFS

To add to my series of DIYs using nought but a bottle of neon spraypaint (bag and necklace), I present a set of DIY neon cuffs inspired by none other than Sass & Bide (who else?). Double cuffs have been the arm party guests of choice for a while now, so why not wrap your wrists in neon? This is another one of those projects that is so simple you could do it with your eyes closed, and drunk. Hope you like - and aren't sick of seeing projects involving spraypaint!

This was my inspiration.

You need:
A set of cheap cuffs (you can use leather, plastic or metal)
Neon and white spraypaint (non-toxic!)

How to:
1. Wipe your cuffs clean.
2. Lay on some scrap paper in a well ventilated space and spray with white. Do a number of light coats to fully cover.
3. Once the undercoat is dry, spray with neon yellow.
4. Leave to dry overnight.

Done!

Many of you will have noticed that cropped and midriff style tops featured heavily on the S/S12 runways, from Prada to Missoni. I particularly like when the style is worn as a matching set, with the top and bottom in the same print - feels very Betty Draper. This holiday season I am going to be making my own - using dress to create skirt and top separates...

This style feels super appropriate given that I am spending 2 weeks on the beach at Byron Bay. Something to bookmark if you're deep in your wintertime!

4 STEPS TO MAKE & KEEP YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

Around New Years Eve I always start thinking about my new years resolutions. But how do you make effective resolutions that you can actually keep and aren't just a product of the Christmas excesses (lose weight, drink less, eat better etc).

I thought I would share with you a little NY Resolution process that might help you plan and stick to your goals. I have to be honest and say that this is something my mum developed a long time ago (she is possibly the most driven person I've ever met) and forced us to do from an early age. Not appreciated at age 13 but as I have grown older it's definitely come in handy. I'm by no means an expert in this field but hopefully you find this (even a little bit) useful.

This process focuses on developing goals for the coming year that address all parts of our life rather than one or two areas, with major consideration of how you will realistically put your goals into action.

Step 1. Write goals for the coming year.

You can use the following categories (a little cheesy but remember they are via my mother!):
TO LIVE (health, fitness, work, money, travel etc)
TO LOVE (family, friends, partner etc)
TO LEARN (academic, business, hobbies etc)
TO LEAVE A LEGACY (community work, charity, environment etc)

Examples:
TO LIVE - 
money: save $15k for the deposit for a house.
travel: go to three cities I haven't been to before
fitness: play a team sport
work: change jobs
(etc etc etc)

Your goals don't have to be major or life altering, just things you want to achieve - no matter how small or big. You should feel free to have as many or as few as you want. If you have one major thing in your life that  you want to work through, feel free to just have that as your single goal, although I usually like to have at least a goal under each category so you know you have a balanced approach.


Step 2. List any barriers

For each of the goals write down any potential barriers or obstructions to making them happen, then think of a strategy for overcoming that barrier.

Example: Save $15k for the deposit for a house. BARRIER - spending too much money on shopping. STRATEGY - Automatically put away x% of wage into an account you cannot touch.

Step 3. Write an operational Plan for each goal

Write a 12 month OPERATIONAL PLAN for your goals with a number of action items. This may have you doing certain activities on a daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. Individual goals may have one action item or many action items, depending on their complexity. 

Example: Save $15k for the deposit for a house. 
Operational Plan - Action items
- Automatically allocate 20% of earnings as savings each month.
- Allow one new purchase per month (DIY the rest!)
- Eat one meal out per weekend instead of 2. Invest in nice produce to cook at home.
- Etc etc etc

Step 4. Mark Your Yearly Planner

Buy yourself a functional diary, and go through the diary and mark key action items. I go for a Molskine weekly diary that shows the whole week over two pages, but you can use what ever you want.

Example: Save $15k for the deposit for a house. Diary note: 24th January, Feb, March - payday, transfer 20% of wage to savings account.

Finally, also add key check points to review how your progress has been going through the year. Example: 24th July - have I saved $7k? At this point you can review what your goals were, which lets you react to your progress and change your goals if you need to.

Here's how one goal may look once you have completed the 4 steps:


Goal: Get fitter and lose xkg.

Potential obstruction: Lack of time to exercise.

Action items: 
- Organise one exercise session with friends on the weekend.

- Alter working hours slightly to allow for exercise in the morning.

- Commit to a half marathon to force self to exercise.

- Integrate 30 mins of incidental exercise into daily routine

Key dates in year planner: weekly run, PT sessions, Singapore half marathon.

I know we all like to do Bridget jones style resolutions - i.e. to become a yoga guru in a week (I am a culprit of this!)  but in reality these types of resolutions can leave you feeling deflated once they don't materialise. Looking realistically at what you can achieve and putting together a plan for how you will do it can be a lot more effective. And don't be phased if not everything works out the way you planned - if you achieve one or two of the major things you list you'll be doing well.

Good luck in 2012!!! I hope doing more DIY comes in at the top of your list.

DIY INSPIRATION - THE FRINGED MAXI SKIRT

Sandra of 5 Inch and Up looks amazing in this Aqua dress - with a maxi part made entirely out of extra long fringing - DIYable? I think so. Although this may be more of a three chef hats project in terms of difficulty and general commitment required, I would love to make one. Fringing can be difficult to find, particularly at this length, so why not go outside the box and buy yourself some fringed room dividers, the ones people sometimes have up in doorways (available here) - a very cost effective way to get some fringing in your life. Simply attach to a skirt of dress and voila!

TREND: DIY DENIM CUT OFFS

Is it just me or are destroyed denim shorts where it's at right now? Ripped, studded, torn, bleached, dyed - it seems you don't have to scroll very far on instagram to see a legion of denim and stud clad bums. It seems everyone is trying their hand at making their own unique pair, and there really isn't any reason to hold back. I mean, who doesn't have an old pair of jeans in their cupboard that need some love?

To start, you use the tutorial I show you here to create the base for your project - a pair of perfectly shaped distressed cut offs. Then, go crazy with studs, paint, lace, fabric, dye (ombre of course!) and bleach to create your one-of-a-kind pair. Pair with thick tights, boots and a coat until summer lets you get your pins out uncovered!

DIY BEC & BRIDGE INSPIRED OMBRE TEE

I recently got carried away ombre dying practically everything in my wardrobe. In addition to the ombre mini I did for Harper's BAZAAR last week, this tee (on the left) is one of my other projects, inspired by none other than the stunning High Summer Bec & Bridge collection.

I'm not going to lie, the process I used was identical to that of the ombre mini I made and posted about over at Harper's BAZAAR, but I really wanted to show you this little piece. For those of you who didn't catch my tutorial, check out my instructions below.

You Need:
- A white tee (mine is from H&M)
- Purple dye
- Salt
- Bucket
- Water

How to:

1. Dampen your fabric - you want it to be wet but not dripping. This helps it take on the dye evenly.
2. Open your packet of dye and separate it evenly into a few different containers.

3. To start, only put one of the measures of dye into the water, mixing according to the instructions on the packet. This will be the least concentrated in which to do the first immersion. Most dyes recommend using warm water and salt to set the dye.

4. Put your tee on a hanger so it hangs evenly and dip it into the dye. The first time you dip it will be the deepest, and you should aim to stop about 15cm from the neckline.

5. Take the tee out and add another container of dye to the bucket and mix up. Dip the tee again, this time only about 2 thirds of the depth of the first time.

6. Add the final container of dye. Dip only the bottom few inches of the tee into the dye at its most concentrated. You can even let it sit in the dye for a little while to take on more colour.

7. Once you think the bottom of the tee is dark enough, wash it out in a sink.

8. Leave the tee to dry. Done!

On a side note, can we talk for a second about that lilac akubra? Nothing has ever been so firmly on my Christmas wishlist before. Perhaps a present to myself when I get back to Australia this weekend...

DIY ON THE RUNWAY - PHILLIP LIM S/S12

The Phillip Lim S/S12 collection was so beautiful, I can't wait to swathe myself in these tones come next Summer (can we just skip Winter already?). I loved the shapes and drapes of the fabrics, and I think I'll be subtly dip dying these sorts of colours, I can't wait! Of course this collection inspired me to DIY. Cut out backs, tops made out of strips of ribbon, side split trousers, fringed bag wrist straps, and oversized ripped denim. I think I may have just DIY-gasamed.

DIY DIP DYE [OMBRE] MINI SKIRT

BEFORE & AFTER: DIY TRIBAL PRINTED MINI DRESS

Ok so I have to admit to being completely and utterly addicted to before and after projects. Any sort of 'before = rubbish, after = rad' gets me. Embarrassingly I sometimes find I'm unable to tear myself away from dodgy home reno shows, or worse, extreme makeover. For some reason I have a weird fascination with the cinderella-like transformations that are inherent in these projects, and I guess that's part of my love for majorly overhauling thrifted clothes.

I was recently rummaging through my local thrift shop and spied a hypnotizing tribal printed fabric (fyi - I like to keep on alert for fabrics when sorting through mounds of secondhand clothes) but when I pulled it out it came in the form of a not so sexy collared dress. Not totally unwearable but not something that was ever going to be at the top of my Saturday night party dress list. The fabric was so amazing and Mara Hoffman-like that I knew it was to be the subject of my next before&after project.

See, I told you the fabric was drool worthy didn't I? My bf tells me he thinks he had a bedsheet set in the same print when he was 6 but that's neither here nor there. When he said that I couldn't help but dream about the amazing cape I would make if I ever stumbled upon those bed sheets...

These were the particular Mara Hoffman s/s 2012 fabrics that inspired me. Umm same same, but different right?

To do this project I got a little tricky with a pair of scissors and my sewing machine.

How I did it:
1. First I cut off the collar (seen in this project) and turned the dress around so that the back was at the front. This gave me a completely different high necked look.
2. Then I took the dress in at the back of the waist by around 3 inches by sewing two new darts - it was key that the waist on this dress fitted snugly.
3. I measured and then cut about 15cm off the bottom of the skirt (I always go shorter when in doubt about a thrifted dress, it's an instant update!).
4. I cut about 6cm off the sleeves and rehemmed.
5. I folded the nape of the back of the dress into a V and sewed down.
6. Finally I swapped the mismatching white buttons for light pink ones that were more understated.

And there you have it. I also popped over to a friend's studio yesterday and used her overlocker to finish the hem properly.

I like to think that with a little love this dress emerged from its chrysalis into the butterfly that by rights this fabric deserves to be. I've been enjoying imagining all the places and outfits in which this dress will play a part in the future - perhaps I should warn all my friends back home that I may not be able to take it off at all while I am back for christmas!

Ummm how flipping cool are these neon mittens? My friend Anna of South Molton St Style made some inspired by these Purl Bee Paint Pail Mittens.

For her version Anna used the neon tote bag tutorial that I put up last week over at Harper's BAZAAR. The mix of neon and neutrals is so right and I'm so very happy to see neon transitioning into winter with ease. How cute would these look peeping out of your navy wool coat? Certainly puts an on-trend spin on the average and generally a bit naff mittens you see around the traps.

So happy that this project has led me to The Purl which is a knitting and craft website filled to the brim with amazing projects and brilliant photography. Book. Marked.

DIY TRIBAL PRINT COLLAR

I recently made this tribal print collar by removing it from a dress that was undergoing major surgery (more on that soon!). In the past I've usually made detachable collars by cutting them off a shirt and keeping the top button to secure them at the neck.

However, I recently found that by actually replacing the top button and button hole with a hook and eye, you're able to get a much neater collar that sits infinitely better. I think because of the way that collars are secured onto shirts and dresses, they can sit a bit funny and too upright when worn as a detachable around the neck. To combat this I simply removed the pieces of fabric on which the top button and button hole sit, and sewed a hook and eye in their place. This is so simple and makes a huge difference to the overall look.

This is the dress I cut it off, you'll see the before & after of the dress very soon. How fun is this techni colour tribal printed fabric? Oh btw, I'm wearing a DIY wrapped black bustier in these pics but you can't see it - just in case you were thinking I like to get around in just detachable collars!

[HOW TO] TAKE A WORK OUTFIT FROM DAY TO NIGHT

Ok so does anyone else struggle to take a work outfit from day to night? Around Christmas time it can be a particular challenge – so many things on and places to be after work. The last thing you want to do is have to go home, or worse yet, have to take your night outfit with you to get chaned. Well – problem solved. What you need is a versatile work outfit that can be dressed up or down to make it fun and appropriate for wherever you find yourself after work. For me, the simple addition of a piece of statement jewellery, like these DIY tassel earrings, a pair of very high heels and some bright red lippy is enough to take an outfit from the office to a party. That’s why I always have these little staples in my handbag in the event that something fun gets sprung on me as I walk out the office door. The ultimate in simple, fuss free party dressing. Let the Christmas parties begin!

DIY TRENDS OF 2011 - YEAR IN REVIEW

The DIY 'year in review' post has to be one of my most enjoyable of the whole year to write. It's a chance to look back at the trends that inspired us – and to recap the best projects of the year. I'm posting this a little earlier than usual so that if there were any projects you didn’t get a chance to do, you can plan ahead for your holidays as a time to get seriously crafty. After all, Christmas is a time for family, for friends… and for spray painting the crap out of things, right? Oh and make sure to check out my post for 2010 to see how things have evolved.

Neon

Coming to a high note at the end of this year and sure to continue at full throttle well into next summer (thank you Sass & Bide SS12!) – neon DIY projects are the shiz-niz. The Cambridge Satchel Co brought florescent yellow and orange (previously best worn in vest form with a hard hat and steel toe boots) to the forefront for the hipsters, and those of us without the cash to splash on a new bag sought out a cheaper option. If you follow me you’ll know my addiction to getting crafty with neon spray paint is slightly out of control and I'm sure I've lost more than a few brain cells from spraying in unventilated spaces... Zip Clutches

Everyone was keen to be seen clutching over sized pencil cases this year - thanks to Celine and a host of other brands. Although American Apparel got on board selling a bank balance friendly version, DIYers everywhere knew we could make one for less. Check out:

Arm Parties

Ok, so is there anything that Leandra of the Man Repeller says that doesn’t go viral? Aptly coining the trend of wearing a kilo of jewellery on your wrists an ‘Arm Party’, the look was very quickly seen on the streets and in magazines. Many thanks to Tommy Ton who seemed to be able to pick a editorial-worthy arm party on the street at 5 miles. A flurry of DIY arm party tutorials popped up in no time, including friendship bracelets, leather bracelets, rope bracelets, diamante bracelets, watches and cuffs. Never one to shy away from telling people what to do (feel for my poor harassed boyfriend!) I did a little HOW TO for putting together the perfect arm party. Check Out:

Dip Bleached

As soon as I saw the Dries Van Noten A/W11 collection I knew that the dip bleached trend would be H-U-G-E with DIY fashionistas all around the world, and I wasn’t wrong. Probably because it’s so simple and cheap – who doesn’t have a bottle of bleach and a pair of old jeans lying around? This was one of the biggest trends of AW11, and it was so good to see such a range of different dip bleached items and looks attempted. Check out:

Lace Embellished Sportswear

Is it just me or are designers purposefully choosing collections that are easy for us to emulate ourselves? The amazing lace embellished sportswear that came down the runway at the Jason Wu A/W11 show is one example of designs that appeal directly to cheap and cheerful DIY projects. And many of us got amongst it didn’t we? Adding back scalloped lace to jeans, tops, sweatshirts and just about everything else. To my utter surprise, Jason Wu even posted the lace embellished jeans I did on his Facebook page - you can imagine how happy I was to see a designer embracing a DIY project based on their collection. Jil Sander Brights

Another collection we all went ga-ga over was Jil Sander S/S11. Colour blocked maxis, white tees and the ubiquitous market bag worn to perfection, these looks filtered down to the high streets in a matter of days. But as usual, it took only a matter of seconds for DIY bloggers all over the world to make their own Jil Sander inspired creations. Check out:

Glitter Shoes

Ok so unless you live under a rock (or this is the first time you’ve clicked on my blog) you'll know that everyone is mad about glitter. On feet of course. Glitter adorned hoofs bounded down the runway at the Miu Miu A/W11 show and promptly into the hearts of DIYers everywhere. Man, Miu Miu sure know how to start a DIY trend don’t they? The bird embellished collars were an epidemic in 2010! Probably because it’s so frickin easy to do, it seems we've all enjoyed getting amongst the glitter shoe trend – regardless of how difficult it is to rid your home of glitter once a project like this has been completed on your dining room table. A Hint of Tribal

A huge number of collections over the last couple of seasons have had a Tribal/Aztec element to them – anything printed, colourful and full of texture is go in my books. And can we talk for a minute about the December Issue of Vogue Australia that paid tribute, in its entirety, to everything tribal? Burberry, Mara Hoffman, Carven, Sass & Bide, Missoni and a host of other designers mixed prints, colours and textures. Hardware Store Jewellery

Last but not least, bloggers all over the world decided this year that they would rather shop for accessories in their local hardware store than anywhere else, and set about making nuts and bolts into bracelets, rings and necklaces. What wasn't to love? Check out:

HOW TO DRESS FOR WINTER

Dressing for winter can be a challenge. Everyone wants to look chic but sadly keeping warm often means dressing like a crazy bag lady eskimo. But it really needn't be this way. Living in London taught me that winter dressing comes down to simple wardrobe maths - with outfits of high quality basics put together using winter wardrobe formulas. Layering is key so your outfits are usually going go like this - 'this plus that plus this plus that equals chic and warm'. Done badly this is where you can end up looking like you fell into your wardrobe drunk and staggered out with whatever fell on top of you. But a bit of smart shopping and wardrobe planning will help eliminate this. The image below shows a perfect basic winter wardrobe - nothing too fancy, just important staples to see you through the cold months. Read on for my simple winter outfit formulas to keep you warm day and night.

Day:

See? It's simply a matter of having a collection of the right staples and your options are endless. I know more than anyone that it's often not possible to buy them all at once, but get an idea of what you are missing and try to buy those things over time instead of other less important purchases. When buying choose colours that complement each other.

When getting dressed a trick is to choose the base of my outfit first. Make the decision between jeans, skirt/shorts and tights or dress and tights as the base, and then plan the rest around it. Simple! Oh, and never underestimate the power of a pair of sheer spotted tights.

Edit: In response to comments from people about needing extra warmth for their climates, here are a few extra tips:

- Layer two pairs of tights, one wool and one opaque.

- Wear thermals such as Uniqlo heat tech tees and leggings under long sleeved tops.

- Stay cosy with a knit layered with a wool jacket.

- Layer tights under jeans.

- Add wool socks over tights and then wack your thigh high leather boots on.

- Invest in a really good quality wool jacket made of thick felt-like material.

[DO IT YOURSELF] CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE

Want to give your family and friends amazing gifts this Christmas but a) are cash strappped or b) want something more personal than a store bought gift? Luckily I've got you covered. Here are my top 11 DIY gifts for the gift giving season. I've focused on chic and on-trend gifts - things that your friends and family would be overjoyed to receive. Oh btw, these gifts aren't christmas themed so would also work for Hannukah, birthdays and any other celebration.

1. Tassel Earrings - Possibly one of the easiest projects to make and perfect for mothers, friends and drag queens alike. These have all the impact of an expensive present without the outlay. Simply buy a pair of tassels from a craft store and attach earring hooks. Boom!

2. Mickey Mouse Pom Pom Headband (via Marc Jacobs) - Ummm how cute is this? I know my sister would love it. To make your own use my tutorial here, but make and attach two pom poms instead of one. You could even make a little one for a child. Too cute!

3. Sequin Collar - Cut the collar off a shirt and glue on some sequin fabric. Perfect for that friend who likes to layer on the sparkles. I can definitely see this being worn as part of a New Years Eve outfit.

4. Neon Collar - Neon is going to continue to be huge next year so why not give your picky sister-in-law a chic gift that will keep on giving? To make one simply cut the collar off a white shirt and spray paint it neon yellow - or glue on neon yellow fabric.

5. Book kindle/ipad case - This is sooo what I'm giving my dad. To make one, cut out the inside of a molskine notebook or vintage book. Remove the pages of the book completely and glue in elastic to hold the kindle or ipad.

6. Dip dyed silk scarf - Take a scarf sized piece of silk and dip dye one side of it lengthways. Embellish with pom poms.

7. Potted Succulent - Don't underestimate the power of the plant! I love giving and receiving succulents like this - they have a big impact with a very small outlay. Buy a cheap succulent and re-pot in a painted pot. Or make a little terrarium in a jar or wine bottle - see some inspiration here.

8. Chain embellished friendship bracelet (via Dannijo) - this is perfect as a gift for someone who lives far away - easily posted! Simply make a friendship bracelet and then sew some bronze chain to the sides.

9. Neon Necklace - Spraypaint a rhinestone necklace neon. This is a killer gift and I'm pretty sure it's what everyone I know will be getting for crimbo. Follow my instructions here and here.

10. Lace Embellished Sweatshirt - This is a perfect winter staple. Add some lace to a sweatshirt - you can follow my instructions here.

11. Canvas with Painted Quote - This is one of my favourite projects and could be given to just about anyone. Just personalise a big canvas with the gift reciever's favourite quote or anything else that takes your fancy. Brownie points if the reciever is a hipster and you use one of their ironic quotes. When in doubt the more random the quote the better eg. this or this.

DIY NEON NECKLACE

One thing I love about DIY projects is that they can be a continual work in progress. For me this is a (somewhat) sustainable answer to fast fashion - you can makeover an item a million times and get the satisfaction of having lots of different items, without the wastage. Two birds one stone as they say. This DIY necklace is an update to the white necklace project (seen here). A re-spray with neon spraypaint was all I needed to transform it into something entirely different. Hip hip horay for DIY!

You need:

Rhinestone necklace

Neon and white spray paint (non-toxic ofcourse)

How to:

1. Lay the necklace on some newspaper/magazine in a well ventilated area.

2. My necklace was obviously white from the previous project so I just re-sprayed with neon. Do yours white and then neon for the neon to pop. Do a number of light coats, letting it dry for a few minutes in between so that the spray doesn't pool on the surface.

3. Leave to dry overnight.

All done! I can see this necklace going though a number of other tranformations in the next couple of months.

DIY ANKLE CUFFS

Put your wrist cuffs on your ankles. Simple! You may remember I posted a while ago (here) about ankle cuffs and how much I wanted to make myself a pair. Wellll, although I didn't get a chance to, I saw that a friend and fellow blogger Jess of Tuula Vintage had made her own by - get this - opening up her wrist cuffs and putting them on her ankles. Genius! These cuffs she got from asos.com for a steal, and I know H&M also has some thinner cuffs you could put on your ankles. I am SO going to do this!

DIY DETAILS - MISSONI S/S12

I must admit that I only recently stumbled upon the Missoni S/S12 collection, even though it was shown a few months ago now. Fashion month is such a blur of collections and details that sometimes some of the best collections for DIY inspiration slip by me. Whilst doing a bit of webslacking last night I was completely blown away by the attention to detail in this collection - the iconic Missoni fabrics intermixed with fringed necklaces, tiered skirts, coloured flowers, tassels, painted seashell necklaces, bright gold chain, shoes with coloured clear heels (I die!) and bags with coloured fans attached. For me this collection brings to mind salsa dancers and mexico - and does it get any more fun than that? Some parts of the show were a little too much in my books but overall is scores a zillion points in the DIY inspiration stakes. You can look forward to seeing some projects inspired by this collection.

For all of you deep into winter, apologies for all the summer inspiration that I have been posting. But there's no reason why accessories and projects like the ones above can't be integrated in your winter wardrobe. In fact my favourite outfit at the moment is a soft grey marl sweatshirt, neon necklace, skinny khaki jeans and black ankle boots. The best of both worlds right?

DIY CARVEN INSPIRED BOW EMBELLISHED PUMPS

Please forgive me for posting about two Carven inspired DIYs in the last couple of weeks - ok so I've clearly got the amazing French brand on the brain. But how fun are these bow embellished pumps? The lovely (and did I mention super cute?) Ren of SEMI sent me this project a little while ago and I just knew you guys would simply love it. What better time for a little Guest DIY than on a Monday morning? The best news, it's such an easy DIY, and that's what this blog's about right?

Ren said 'I loved the heels with bows in the Carven resort collection this season and thought they were too easy not to make. I used the straps from a hideous bunny-chewed pleather bag that needed to go. My old black pumps needed some love anyway.'

You Need:

a pair of pumps
scraps of leather or pleather
scissors
hot glue

How to:

1. Cut the leather into rectangles for the bows of around 10 - 12 cm long and 4 cm wide, and two smaller strips or around 5cm long and 1 cm wide

2. Using scissors, round the ends and then pinch them in the middle to create the bows.

3. Wrap the smaller strips around the pinched in sections and glue the back side to secure.

4. Glue the bows to the back of your heels. You could easily stitch a snap to the bow/your shoe if you didn't want the bows to be permanent, or attach with and hook and eye to be able to put them on and take them off.

Ahhh, so cute!

For me this type of DIY project epitomises everything good about making things yourself. It's a simple, well executed idea that takes only a little time and uses inexpensive materials - but manages to update the whole look of an item. What more could you want? I hope you have a go!

DIY GLITTER BOOTS

Ok so most of you know that I've been obsessing over glitter this season. Particularly glitter embellished boots of all kinds. For some reason the mix of the toughness of the boots paired with glitter works so well for me, worn with a classic outfit like denim shorts, sheer white singlet and a black silk blazer. DIY INSPIRATION - CUT OUT KNIT

I spied this amazing cut out knit by Aussie brand Kahlo whilst perving on a fellow Style Network-er, Alexandra of 4th and Bleeker. Love. It. It got me thinking about how I could update a cable knit sweater dress I have in my closet. Hello scissors, you're gettin' a work out sometime soon.

That reminds me, something I always think about when DIYing is the fact that the difference between a good and an average DIY is the quality of finishing. And it's often what sets apart a bought item and item you've made yourself. And when it comes down to it, we all want our DIYs to look professionally made. For a project like this finishing is key - cutting a big gash in the side of a knit would look fun but pretty much as though you had done it yourself or perhap snagged yourself on a fence whilst frolicking in a field. To finish it properly you could use an overlocker, but who has one of those handy? An easier way to do it would be to roll the edges over and then lightly hand stitch. What more can I say? Finishing makes allllll the difference.

DIY [CARVEN INSPIRED] CUT OUT MINI DRESS

Taking a horrendous dress and turning it into something cute and wearable is what I love most about DIY, and all it takes is a little time and imagination. As some of you may know, I fell in love with the Carven SS12 collection, particularly the strategically placed cut outs on the dresses. I knew the triangular cut out was something I would have to try for myself.

Originally I wanted a dress with a bright print like the Carven fabrics, but was unable to find anything I liked. I snagged this pink dress from the $1 pile of my local thrift shop and thought I could use that instead. I tried the dress on when I got home and my boyfriend almost vommed, it was not flattering in any way. I was told I resembled a 'sister wife' farmer in my mid-calf length, puffed shoulder dress that was also about 4 inches too big in the waist.

Transforming this dress took a little time but not that much skill, and all of it can be done by hand if you don't have a sewing machine.

How I did it:

1. I cut the dress short and hemmed it.

2. I took the dress in at the waist by about 4 inches by sewing two thick darts in the back along the existing seam lines.

3. I then created the triangle in the front by cutting an upside down T into the front centre of the dress. I then folded the flaps of the T up and out to create the triangular opening.

4. I secured these using small stitches and then sewed the raw egde of the bottom of the T over to hem it.

5. Finally, I cut the sleeves off the dress and hemmed the new armholes.

6. I then gave the dress a really good iron, focusing on the hemmed areas.

All done! This dress is sure to get plenty of wear. I'll be donning it with some sheer spotted tights once the weather starts cooling down a bit in Hong Kong. If you like this look but don't like the exposed skin, you can always sew some sheer lace over the opening which I think would be very cute.

I hope this sort of project inspires you to be a bit imaginative with things you see in thrift stores. There's a world of possibilities once you get to grips with taking the scissors to your clothes. Happy DIYing!

DIY CLOTHING MOOD RAIL

If you have space, why not invest in a spare clothes rack to use as 'mood rail' - a place for you to separate a collection of seasonal items in different colours, prints and materials depending on your mood. Shini coined the term mood rail in a recent post and it felt so apt for how I have been using mine. This rack allows you to make little capsule collections of your own clothes and helps you put outfits together - especially when you're running out the door. It's also a great idea for slowly packing over the course of a week before you go on holiday. If you were really organised you could also use the mood rail to plan a weeks outfits on a Sunday evening... but maybe this would be taking pre-planning a bit too far? You can DIY your own rail using this or this tutorial.

BLANK CANVAS

Is all I want right now. Space to make things, sew things, photograph things, and have parties (obv). It might not seem like a luxury to some but with space such a premium in HK, this sort of thing would be a dream come true. To have this you need to leave the comfort of the central square km and venture into industrial warehousing but I think it's worth it. I'm on the lookout and will keep you posted. Can you imagine all the projects I could have on the go if I had this type of space? An overwhelming number of possibilities!

A TRIP TO HAT HEAVEN

When I was back in Australia recently I had the pleasure of visiting the Ascot Hats workshop, where they make the most mindblowing hats. These aren't stuffy or boring race hats - but serious statement pieces that are practically wearable art. It was so fun to see all the different projects in various stages of completion. The amount of effort and work that the owner Pam puts into every design is out of this world, and really shows in the quality. I love how easily they channel on-trend details into every project. Leopard print, sculpted lace, Marc Jacobs-esque polka dots and tulle pom poms had me itching for the olden days where women wouldn't be seen without a hat. Let's bring that back! They also made a mickey mouse hat for me last year (seen below) which has to be one of my most treasured possessions.

DIY BALAYAGE HIGHLIGHTS

Recently I decided that I wanted a change for my hair - and thought at-home balayage (fancy French term for hand-painted highlights) would be a good way to experiment. Even though it's been around for a while, I still love the look of Alexa Chung's subtle highlights (seen here). This is what I did.

You Need:

A home highlighting kit (I used L'Oreal Perfect Blond). Don't get blond dye as that won't lighten your hair.
An old shirt and towel
A clock or stopwatch

How to:

1. Open the highlighting kit and mix up the dye as directed on the pack.

2. Brush dry and unwashed hair.

3. Using a mascara wand, apply the dye to the bottom few inches of my hair, and then rub it in with your hands (in gloves!). I kept the dye way below my chin line, but how far you go up will probably depend on your hair length and how obvious you want it.

4. Use the wand to do a few lighter strands up the hair a little so you don't get a harsh line.

5. Wrap your hair up in an old tea towel and pin it to the top of my head while waiting. You don't want to get any of the bleach on your skin.

6. Check the colour after 10 minutes by removing some of the dye - re-cover if it's not light enough or wash out if it is. I kept mine on for 20 mins and then washed out. I then quickly blowdried to get an idea of the actual colour change.

7. Apply the dye again but this time only to the ends for 10 mins. This is to get a gradual change in colour and an ombre affect. You can do this as many times as you like until you get a look that you like.

8. Wash out, deep condition and style.

VERDICT

To be honest, this was quite a traumatic experiment for me. I've never had my hair coloured before (ever) so I was really shocked when I took the dye off the first time. Like, really really. But it's sort of growing on me... Haha.

It's definitely an easy thing to do at home - you can simply keep applying the dye to the ends for 10 minutes or so until you get the desired result. Oh and did I mention that this process can cost you upwards of a couple of hundred dollars in salons? Although I do think it's best to get a friend to help you do this so you can do the back properly.

In retrospect I should have done a strand test before I started, but I was too excited to do it so I didn't bother (refer to the photo of me with the gloves on). I suggest you do this and monitor the colour change. Mine isn't overly blond because I don't think it would suit me, but you can make it as blond as you like - even white blond! I also popped into the hair dresser and had a budget ($10) trim (about an inch off) after doing it so that the ends were healthy, as bleaching like this can really dry out your hair. That isn't essential though. Oh and also I dont think it's a good idea to do this on already coloured hair. One key thing is that I will probably only wear my hair curly with this look, as it is quite obvious on straightened hair.

The best thing about this sort of hair project is that if you are really unhappy with it you can always chop it off. Why not experiment? If anyone has any tips for this process I would love to hear them. I've heard that if you do it on wet hair with a coating of conditioner the blending of the colours is better. Does anyone have any experience of this?

DIY INSPIRATION - CUT OUT BACK DRESS

Recently I've been making lots of accessories and haven't been spending as much time refashioning thrifted clothes as I used to. Not sure why, but all that's about to change - starting with this amazing dress. Does it get any prettier than this? (Ummm, no!). You may remember I made this cut out back dress a while ago, well I'm looking forward to finding some time to give this style a go.

DIY ROPE NECKLACE and more...

Sometimes I see editorials that fill me such DIY inspiration I feel like I should just quit my job and take up crafting full time. Or become a stylist - one with very limited actual styling abilities but plenty of skill with a couple of balls of neon string. The neon/tribal/beach theme in this shoot had me literally drooling, with the DIY inspiration details a giant cherry on top.

I have a majorly creative weekend planned, and this shoot has inspired me to:

- craft some simple rope necklaces

- make that blanket cape I keep banging on about

- make a skirt out of some mexican fabric

- craft a colourful feather collar

Phew. Lots of work ahead clearly. Happy Friday guys! Have you got any projects planned?

DIY INSPIRATION - VERSACE FOR h&m GOLD TIPPED PLEATED SKIRT

The Versace for H&M collection was pretty out there. One piece that particularly caught my eye was the pleated silk mini skirt with gold embellishments on the point of each pleat. Kind of like collar tips but for pleats. Me likey! Thrift stores are full of pleated skirts, and I think I'll be trying this out using some supplies from my local framing store. It's such a small detail that makes the world of difference to a skirt.

DIY ON THE RUNWAY - VICTORIA SECRET 2011 RUNWAY SHOW

Putting aside the out-of-this-world bodies for a minute - lets focus on the amazing DIY inspiration that sailed down Victoria Secret the runway last night. Gahhhhh! Whoever makes the costumes is incredibly talented and deserves a medal for their DIY skills and ability to see sexy potential in every outfit. The floral bow embellished shoulders took the cake for me, along with the studded wings, a maxi skirt made out of a patchwork blanket, peacock feather skirt, leopard print wrapped top, and rainbow crochet bell sleeved number. The hotties have inspired me to take my crafting to another level!
